Work Placement/ Professional Development Evaluation:
Rebecca Charles February 2008 - Present
Working for Rebecca has been fairly blissful as we have been friends for a while now. Rebecca owns her own salon in the centre of Leeds. I have been designing all her promotional work, whether that be printed, which is usually in the form of fliers/postcards and some work online.
From this I have learned how to work professionally, independently and patiently. Working for a client is tough because they are constantly changing their mind about what they want (even when you know they are wrong) and more often than not don’t give you enough time to do a job, its usually a phone call that morning and they want it that night.
White Label Clothing May 2008 - Present
Joe Duffield and I fitted his new shop in Thornton Arcade after they had to move from the Corn Exchange.
I suggested we use paints and marker pens but they wanted the shop to be done in the same style as that of the one in Manchester, which is a montage mainly made up of newspaper.
Pathways School (ESBD) Redcar & Cleveland July 2008
My father works at a school for children with learning difficulties and invited me up to run a few workshops over two days. I thought the best way to approach this would be to do something with them that is simple yet something they would be interested in and find fun.
We used Photoshop to create some simple stencils, which were finally printed onto a canvas. The workshop went down well with the ones who wanted to be involved and I learned its not always easy to control a room full of people.
The Faversham November 2008
I approached Steve Allison; owner of the Faversham and asked if he had any space on his walls he would like me to paint on. Co-incidentally, he has just had the walls plastered and painted so I have the choice of three spots. We met a few times and discussed my design, which was originally for anti-magazine (an online zine) we altered it slightly and it was painted about five feet high by five feet wide.
It was the first time I had ever done anything like this before and it certainly showed. I used marker pen to draw in the out line then hand painted the rest, I bought the wrong size brush but couldn’t afford another as it was about £15! (apparently, you need brushes made with horse hair or you will leave brush marks) so trying to paint, especially paint type proved quite difficult. If I were ever to do it again I would have a much better understanding.

Statement of intent
Jon Moore
Statement of Intent:
When I finish in June, the plan is to get out of Leeds, lets be honest its not the London of the north and its starting to grind! So I will start looking for jobs in the magazine industry, which means I need to develop the necessary skills in order to do so.
As I missed the introduction to typography and magazines in the first year and was experimenting with other things last year I intend to focus mainly around magazines both printed and online. I aim to teach myself all aspects of this from working with columns and the grid to type and composition. I think type is a big part of this so learning more about typography is very important.
I also intend to send some work to magazines to be shown, the likes of anti-magazine and maybe even to don't panic, which isn't a magazine but is still a platform to show your work.
There are a few things I would like to experiment with on the side, I would like to paint a mural in an independent establishment in Leeds somewhere. I will take on some free-lance work as I go.
